Older Works
Conceptual work from MFA
When I was part of an art community, I became familiar with the work of many people. I understood what a piece was about, how it changed in the making, and how it might be different from the piece that proceeded it. I was aware of a huge gap between my understanding of other artists work and how a visitor to a show experienced it. That conflict lead me making pieces without knowing me or my intentions. I made pieces that had a direct message, explained in text and illustrated with objects and photography.

Cans
Cans in a box
The theme is finding interest in junk, in the mundane. Making the point through the contrast with the carefully made box, and a laugh when you open the drawer.

Gospel Choir
Gospel Choir 28’ x 12’h
I went to a gospel concert. The singers leaned way out to the left with their arms up and then way out to the right. This was the first piece that had welding in it. It was installed in front of the old sculpture building at UMass (long gone) and came down 24 hours later in one of the strongest winds recorded in the area.

Lawn Drawings
Lawn Drawing 2 acres: Claremont, California (with Peter Wormser)
Conceptual/Performance hoax piece. This is the Pellisier Mall at Pitzer College designed by a famous architect. We distributed notices (pre internet) to every student mailbox warning that surveying was to commence on the Pellisier Mall, implying a change would be made. That night we “borrowed” a line marker and chalk and made extensive drawings. People took sides right away, for or against making any changes. It was fun and it did look great. The snow covered San Gabriel mountains are in the background. |
